Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the TM program, was known for his practical, scientific approach and his lifelong endeavor to relieve suffering and promote peace by bringing effective meditation to people everywhere. He trained 40,000 teachers and founded non-profit meditation centers, schools and universities worldwide. MORE
Maharishi Foundation The Transcendental Meditation program is offered in the United States by Maharishi Foundation USA, a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization.
- 1. To reduce individual and societal stress
- 2. Unfold the full creative potential of individual and society
- 3. Realize the highest ideals of education
- 4. Promote peace and progress for the family of nations
As a non-profit, Maharishi Foundation has no owners or shareholders. No board members or other individuals profit financially from the organization's programs. Staff, including senior management, receive salaries well below the national average for their position. All revenues from course fees go entirely to support the organization's educational and charitable initiatives in the U.S. and around the world.
Origins and history The Transcendental Meditation technique was introduced in 1955 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi . It was revived from an ancient tradition of meditation after being long lost to society even in India—the land of its origin.
The TM technique has become the world's most widely learned and most extensively researched form of meditation.
The TM technique is derived from the oldest continuous tradition of knowledge on earth, the Vedic tradition—which also gave the world yoga. From Maharishi's perspective, this tradition is not merely a cultural or philosophical tradition, but has passed down a system of knowledge containing scientifically testable technologies for human development and well-being.
After decades of scientific studies on the TM technique, the practice has proven to be timeless and universal: effective for all times and places because it is based on natural, universal principles of mind and body.
The TM technique represents a renewed understanding about meditation and human potential:
- 1. Meditation need not be difficult; in fact, effortlessness is the key to the TM technique's effectiveness
- 2. With proper instruction, every mind can easily transcend, or settle inward beyond mental activity, to access the field of limitless energy, creativity and intelligence that lies deep within human consciousness
- 3. The TM technique allows anyone to become an "expert meditator" almost immediately, because the process of effective meditation is based not on developing new abilities or learning to control or steady the mind, but on learning to make use of an inherent, natural tendency of mind and nervous system that every human being possesses
- 4. Through the TM technique, the full benefits of meditation are readily available to everyone regardless of age, lifestyle, beliefs or educational background.
The technique has now been learned by more than 6 million people and introduced in public and private schools, businesses, Fortune 500 companies, universities, Native American reservations, the military, prisons, and other public institutions.
Teachers The TM technique is taught only in-person by rigorously trained certified instructors, through the system of teaching developed by Maharishi.
Certified teachers of the TM technique have successfully completed a rigorous teacher training program (a 5-month intensive) and typically have many years experience with the practice and teaching of meditation.
As with many professions that involve extensive training and development of specific skills, all TM teachers, after being qualified as instructors by attending TM Teacher Training, attend periodic teacher workshops and refresher courses to maintain their professional certification
To ensure that each student receives the practice in its original effectiveness—in its purity—certified TM instructors uphold the tested and proven system of teaching developed by Maharishi, in accord with the timeless teaching procedures of the Vedic tradition. Find a Teacher Near You
A message from our National Director Quantum Physicist John Hagelin
I became a quantum physicist to gain a deeper knowledge of how the universe works and to better understand our place in it.
I feel fortunate to have worked with several of the world's leading scientists, to have been part of some the most advanced and exciting research in the history of physics—such as the development of superstring theory.
Yet, for me personally, another area of research has been perhaps even more rewarding: meditation.
Modern science, exploring the depths of nature's functioning, has made great strides toward realizing Einstein's dream: identifying a single unified field that underlies all matter and energy—the source and substance of everything, from seashell to farthest star.
Researchers exploring the effects of meditation have discovered something equally momentous: deep within the human mind, underlying all our thoughts and emotions and perceptions, is a unified field of consciousness, a source of limitless energy, creativity and intelligence that we can draw upon to enrich and transform our lives.
Several hundred scientific studies on the Transcendental Meditation technique, conducted over the past forty years by scientists around the world, seem to point to one conclusion: there is a much greater potential to human life than most of us had imagined.
This research suggests that it is possible for us to live in a continuous state of heightened well-being, in which stress-related diseases—currently epidemic—are no longer commonplace and stressors lose their power to overwhelm. But relief from stress may be the least of the technique's benefits: creativity flows more freely, academic performance improves, relationships become more harmonious, life gets better and better.
I'm not singing the praises merely of this effortless meditation technique, but of the immense potential of our own minds. The ancient texts on meditation proclaim that the fully developed human consciousness is capable of much greater accomplishments—both individually and collectively—than minds that have not realized their full potential. I believe that the greatest adventure of our age, or any age, is to discover and unfold that potential. The TM technique has proven to be a very effective and easy way to do just that.
I invite you to explore this website, check out the scientific research, attend an introductory talk, and discover for yourself the many personal benefits of the TM technique.

Helping those in need: Over the past five years, full TM scholarships have been given to more than 300,000 at-risk students and others in need, through partnerships with other non-profit organizations and foundations. Maharishi Foundation works closely with the David Lynch Foundation on a wide range of such charitable projects, as highlighted in this video.
